In a battle between two of the top teams in the Cape Ann League, Newburyport’s boys basketball team (11-0) stormed into Lynnfield Friday and left with a 78-65 win to remain perfect. The Pioneers (10-2) entered the game on a 10-game winning streak. They were led by Grant Neal with 23 points, followed by Justin Flores with 18 and freshman Brandon Doherty with 17.

A versatile Lynnfield offense was led by Neal (24 points), Doherty (17), Oliver Harth (13), and Flores (10).

Anthony Calla and Lucas Deraps staked the Pioneers (6-4-3) to a 2-0 cushion before Deraps finished off Rockport to make it 3-1 late in the third period.

BC High ripped two third-period goals, but St. John’s Prep (6-3-2) had enough banked to hold on. JR Goldstein, Brandon Ward, and Gavin Anderson scored goals, while Nathan Michaud poured in 21 saves for The Prep.

Asuka Keough (2 goals) and goalie Avery Mason (shutout) lifted the Panthers (10-3) over PLNR (4-7-1) this past weekend.
WRESTLING
St. John’s Prep returned from West Springfield with convincing wins against Marlborough (66-16), Franklin (54-21), West Springfield (55-16), and Southwick (69-4). Undefeated Eagles were Collin Vitale, Ben Schumacher, Graham Conway, Boden Dormer, Jimmy Lally, Will LaVallee, Charlie Poor, Bryant Mason, and Joe Irzyk.
TRACK AND FIELD
During Saturday’s MSTCA State Coaches Invitational, St. John’s Prep was led by Henry McDonnell (3rd – mile – 4:21.18) and Leo Emerson (4th – 55mh – 7.79). As for the Freshman Sophomore Invitational, Lynnfield’s Jackson Lewis recorded 16th in high jump (5-2), while Alex Amico placed 30th in shot put (34-1.75). St. John’s Prep was paced by Garrett Dodge (11th – 600m – 1:29.63), Michael Salemi (15th – long jump – 18-02.25), Will Figulski (12th – shot put – 39-9), and Vinny Graziani (17th – shot put – 37-0.50).
