Crews responded to a heavy fire at 17 Longbow Circle last Thursday afternoon caused by a gas grill fire up against a house, which left the rear side of the house “very damaged.”
Fire Chief Glenn Davis told The Weekly News that the intense heat from the gas grill fire caused the contents of the propane tank to heat up. According to a Facebook post from the town’s Fire Department, the first engine that showed up reported heavy fires at the rear of the house.
“Crews encountered a propane tank BLEVE (explosion) and fortunately no one was injured,” the Facebook post read. “The family cat was rescued safe and sound by firefighters.”
Davis told The Weekly News that the resident had gone out to preheat the grill to cook, went back in the kitchen, and came out around two to three minutes later and saw flames from under the grill.
“(She) realized it looked like there was a problem and grabbed the fire extinguisher, and at that point it was starting to extend to the house and up the back of the house,” Davis said, saying that it was at that point that the resident called 911.
According to the Facebook post, firefighters from North Reading, Peabody, Middleton, and Wakefield assisted with the rescue and helped cover the Lynnfield Fire Department, protecting the town in case of any subsequent calls.
Davis told The Weekly News that the residents of the home are “very fortunate,” and that the State Fire Marshal’s office and the Lynnfield Police Department are still investigating the fire.
