Pioneer Singers get ‘real-world experience’ in New York City

May 28, 2024 by Richelle Melad

The Lynnfield Middle School Pioneer singers recently went to New York City to perform at various locations and experience what Broadway has to offer, a trip led and organized by LMS Music Director Stephen Bloom.

The group was created 25 years ago, and it’s the group’s ninth year in New York City since annual tours started back in 2000. According to Bloom, the trip has been in the planning stages ever since they came back from their last tour to Annapolis, Maryland.

“It’s great to be back, touring full scale again,” Bloom said, adding that some of their other favorite destinations include Williamsburg, Virginia and Montreal in Canada.

The group performed on the flight deck at the Intrepid Museum and the St. Malachy Church at Times Square which is sometimes called “The Actors’ Chapel” among other locations. The group also went to the Museum of Broadway, the Radio City Music Hall, and saw Harry Potter and the Cursed Child.

According to Bloom, part of the tours that he always gives also include spontaneous performances that he described as “sort of like a flash mob,” which the group did in Times Square, at the Top of the Rock, and at the Imagine Mosaic at Strawberry Fields at Central Park.

“I think it’s very important to let them have a real world kind of experience,” Bloom said, recalling that some of the 16 students who went on the trip are around 10 to 11 years old, and he himself did not perform in New York City until he was a music major in college. “It goes far beyond what we can do just in the school. And it’s a great opportunity for them, and I know they really enjoyed themselves, and so did their parents.”
