To the editor:
Work continued last week in preparation for the Veterans Day dedication of our new Veterans Memorial on South Common Street. The electrician completed the installation of the lights, and every evening, beginning Nov. 11, the entire memorial and the American flag will be illuminated automatically. The remaining contracting work includes landscaping and irrigation.
Last week, postcard-style invitations were printed, and this week, an invitation will be mailed to Lynnfield’s 400-plus veterans to attend the dedication. The dedication ceremony will be very special. In August, I sent formal invitations to our Massachusetts delegation, including both state and federal politicians. I also sent invitations to family members of Lynnfield’s veterans who were killed in action.
The dedication will include a formal color guard, as well as a speech by featured speaker Retired U.S. Navy Vice Admiral William Merz. Students from Lynnfield High School will present summaries of each war depicted on the memorial, including the reading of the names of Lynnfield residents killed in action. Lynnfield High School’s a cappella/choral singing group will also perform. The ceremony will conclude with Lynnfield resident Todd Angilly singing God Bless America.
Next week’s update will include additional information on the dedication ceremony, invited guests’ responses, and additional featured speakers. Stay tuned!
