Sweet Paws Rescue, a nonprofit animal rescue organization based in Massachusetts, hosted Puppies + Pilates on July 19.
“Breathe in, downward dog. Breathe out, actual dog,” the organization said, introducing an event mixing a workout with adoptable puppies on MarketStreet Lynnfield Saturday.
Sweet Paws Rescue is a foster-based rescue organization committed to using all possible resources to save victimized and neglected animals.
“Our unwavering goal is to find forever homes for dogs, cats, and other animals in need of rescue and refuge, so that they can live out the remainder of their lives in comfort and happiness,” their website says.
According to Marketing Manager Josie Daigle, around 40% of animals taken into care by the organization are from Massachusetts. The others come from partnering states Mississippi and Alabama.
In an interview for Boston 25 News, Founder Cynthia Sweet discussed the overwhelming abandonment of dogs in Massachusetts.
“The number of animals abandoned is unprecedented,” she said. “When you find them tied to telephone poles, fences, dumped in the woods, they just wiggle like ‘Thank God, somebody’s here to rescue me!’”
But there are hardly enough foster homes to fulfill the needs.
The Puppies + Pilates event on July 19 gave the community an opportunity to show support for abandoned dogs. Sweet Paws Rescue pays all medical bills and supplies for their foster families.
Attendees, Daigle said, got in “a little workout” and “a lot of snuggles.”
The adoption event was the third and final one this summer, open to all, starting at 10 a.m. on The Green. All proceeds went to Sweet Paws Rescue, to continue their central mission: to save people, “one animal at a time,” Daigle concluded.
