Roundup: St. John’s Prep wrestlers take down conference

The St. John’s Prep wrestling team secured its 28th consecutive Catholic Conference championship Monday and 31st in program history. In a super-quad against conference opponents, the Eagles flew by Saint John’s Shrewsbury, Catholic Memorial, Boston College High, Malden Catholic, and Xaverian Brothers. Undefeated St. John’s Prep wrestlers were Colin Vitale, Ben Schumacher, Graham Conway, Jimmy Lally, Will LaVallee, Charlie Poor, Sam Josey, and Bryant Mason.

The Black and Gold (10-4) delivered behind wins from Zach Inafuku, Nate Barstow, Jason Kouyoumdjian, Jakob Hulett, Caleb DeSouza, Luke Molla, Griffin McCarthy, David Glynn, Jack Cuddy, and Zack Morse.

BOYS BASKETBALL

Lynnfield 76
Ipswich 50

No home court, no problem for Lynnfield, which stayed hot and improved to 9-1. Leading the Pioneers were Grant Neal (26 points), Oliver Harth (15), Brandon Doherty (9 ), and Justin Flores (8).

Lynnfield (7-1) defended home court with a strong victory against the Hornets. Four Pioneers — Neal (12 points), Cam Chisholm (11), Harth (10), and Harris Hadzihasanovic (10) — finished in double figures.

Despite an opening goal from CJ Anderson and a go-ahead strike from Anothony Calla, a 2-1 lead was as good as it got for Lynnfield, which fell to 4-5-3.

Behind goals from Cam Dembro, CJ Anderson, and Brayden Anderson (first varsity goal), the Pioneers shut out Triton as goalie Angelo Covino saved all 18 shots against. Cole MacKinnon, Anthony Calla, Max Gromko, Brendan Driscoll, and Nick Kelter dished out assists.

TRACK AND FIELD

It was an action-packed weekend of high school track and field as local athletes performed in MSTCA divisional relays. In Division 1, St. John’s Prep was victorious with 68 points. Second-place Central Catholic totaled 37. Tyson Stroope took third in the high jump relay (6-2), while the 4x50y relay team of Ahmir Hykel, Dayvian Sullivan, Jordan Toribio, and Andrew McManmon took first in 21.27. Also winning was the 4x200m team of Hykel, McManmon, Quinten Murray, and Will Quigley (1:30.66). In Div. 5, Lynnfield’s Brendan Reilly took eighth in the long jump (19-10.25), while the 1,600m unit of Sofia Giardina, Emma Greenleaf, Lauren Mattia, and Abby Lopez finished sixth in 4:38.25.
