The Lynnfield/Wakefield boys and girls swimming and diving teams are only two meets into the regular season, but both have already enjoyed significant success with multiple swimmers qualifying for the sectional and state championship meets.
The boys team is undefeated at 2-0 after defeating Hamilton-Wenham 84-49 at Gordon College, while the girls team dropped to 1-1 with a 95-74 loss to the Generals.
Freshman Violet Moreira, in her first time competing in the 100 breaststroke at the high school varsity level, stole the show, setting a new school record of 1:13.15. The previous record of 1:13.57 was set by Bailey Fanikos in 2013.
Senior captain Chloe Cieslewicz qualified for sectionals in the 500 freestyle with a first-place time of 5:58.01.
Junior Sophia Tramontozzi qualified for states in the 200 freestyle with a winning time of 2:06.54.
The 200 medley relay team of Tramontozzi, Moreira, Cieslewicz and junior Katie Shrewsbury won with a state-qualifying time of 2:04.31. The same quartet also captured the 200 freestyle relay in 1:51.15, another state-qualifying performance.
On the boys side, the 200 medley relay of junior captain James Cook, sophomore Malcolm Kelton, senior captain Nick DeGennaro and sophomore Michael Brown qualified for states with a winning time of 1:48.75.
Brown won the 50 freestyle and 500 freestyle, though times were unavailable. DeGennaro captured the 200 freestyle (1:59.40) and the 100 butterfly (57.32), qualifying for states in the latter.
Cook won the 100 freestyle with a state qualifying time of 51.20 and the 100 backstroke with a sectional qualifying time of 1:00.08.
Both teams opened the season with wins against host Wilmington at the Burbank YMCA in Reading on Dec. 27 with the boys winning in a 101-51 rout and the girls winning easily, 92-55.
Brown set a PB and won the 100 free in 57.82 with Koleszar finishing second in 59.19.
Cook took the 200 free with a time of 1:55.14. Lynnfield/Wakefield swept the 200 IM with Malcolm Kelton placing first in 2:14.55, Quinn O’Connor taking second in 2:20.40 and Brendan Koleszar taking third in 2:29.42. Kelton also won the 100 breaststroke in 1:11.66.
DeGennaro won the 50 free in 25.0 with Kaiden Steffo right behind in second with a PB 26.43.
Andrew Meadows won the 500 free in 7:01.32 with Elijah Beaton taking second in 8:33.56.
Both teams are back in action Sunday against Triton at the Torigian Family YMCA in Peabody. The action begins at 5 p.m.
