The Town’s Board of Registrars unanimously approved a new system for the upcoming local election at its meeting on Monday.
In the upcoming election, Lynnfield residents will now have the option for in-person early voting. Early voting will be held Friday, April 3 from 9 a.m.-4 p.m. in the Old Town Hall Office at 55 Summer St.
Although the last day to register is 10 days before any election, it commonly falls on a Saturday. Lynnfield recognizes Saturday holidays, meaning the last day to register will also fall on April 3. However, the office will be open from 8 a.m.-5 p.m. to allow residents to register or change parties before the annual election on Tuesday, April 14.
Polling on election day will still be held in the Lynnfield High School at 275 Essex St. from 7 a.m.-8 p.m.
Board members noted the decision on early voting is intended to give voters more flexibility and to see how much interest there is in early voting at a local level. This will be the first time Lynnfield has offered early in-person voting for an annual election.
Nomination papers are available on Jan. 8 at 8:30 a.m., and Lynnfield residents have until Feb. 24 at 5 p.m. to submit them. Candidates are required to submit at least 50 signatures from registered Lynnfield voters.
In terms of mail-in ballots or mail-in absentee ballot, the last day to apply for both is April 7 at 5 p.m., though residents may apply for an absentee ballot in person until April 13 no later than noon.
