Mass. Fire Services reminds community about hot liquid safety

December 29, 2025 by Amanda Lurey

The Massachusetts Department of Fire Services is urging community members to take extra caution this winter when it comes to hot liquids.

“Hot liquids burn like fire! Hot liquid scalds are the leading type of serious burn injury in Massachusetts, and young children are at greatest risk,” the Department stated. “With families gathering for Christmas meals and enjoying hot coffee or tea โ€” or something stronger โ€” remember to keep the young ones away from hot food, beverages, and cooking liquids. It’s especially important not to carry a baby and a hot beverage that could spill!”

The Department also suggests people to consider using a travel mug for hot beverages if there are children underfoot.
