Roundup: Lynnfield icemen take down Winthrop

Against reigning Division 4 state champion Winthrop, Lynnfield boys hockey defeated the Vikings 3-2 to earn its first win of the season. Brendan Driscoll scored the game-tying goal to spark the Pioneers. Nick Kelter, Andrew Carbone, Anthony Calla, CJ Anderson and Jackson McShane each recorded an assist. Angelo Covino made 18 saves.

Lynnfield 3

Essex Tech 3

Lynnfield settled for a heartbreaking tie against Essex Tech last Saturday. With 10 seconds remaining in regulation, Essex Tech scored the equalizer to force overtime. Neither team found a breakthrough in the extra period.

Sam Curley recorded a goal and two assists, while Calla added a goal and an assist. Lucas Deraps scored a goal, and assists came from Michael Mattia, Kelter and Anderson. Michael Marenghi made 21 saves in net.

Girls hockey

PLNR 3

Medford-Malden 2

Enemy ice was no problem for PLNR and first-year head coach Guy Angiuoni. The team knocked off Medford-Malden in overtime with a game-winner scored by Sarah Mitchell with 1:33 remaining in overtime.

Eleni Spack and Sydney Zizza also scored for PLNR. Goalie Sophia Downing earned her first win, making a series of key saves to keep the team in the game.

Beverly-Danvers 3

PLNR 1

Despite a goal from Grace Allen, assisted by Eleni Spack and Sarah Mitchell, PLNR met its match in a “very competitive game,” according to first-year coach Guy Angiuoni. PLNR dipped to 1-1, while the Panthers improved to 2-0.

Lynnfield 52

Triton 27

The Pioneers led 12-5 after the first quarter and never looked back. Hayden Valiton led the way with 12 points, while Chloe Grieves snagged a double-double of 10 points and 11 rebounds.

“Our defense was pretty solid [and] we had 15 steals,” said Lynnfield coach Sue Breen. “We shared the ball well and had 10 assists.”

Lynnfield 61

Essex Tech 18

Everything was clicking for the Lynnfield girls basketball team last Friday night as the Pioneers rolled past Essex Tech, 61-18.

Lynnfield led 11-10 before going on a decisive 28-1 run to take a 39-11 advantage into halftime. The defense remained dominant in the second half, as the Pioneers outscored the Hawks 11-5 in the third quarter. It marked the second straight game Lynnfield scored more than 50 points.

Hayden Valiton led the Pioneers with 21 points and five steals. Chloe Grieves recorded a double-double with 12 points and 13 rebounds.
