Winter weather has arrived, and Lynnfield Center Water District has been busy preparing for all the challenges winter storms bring with it!
Driving around town, you may notice that green, LCWD hydrants are covered in clear, plastic bags. Be assured, the hydrants are not out of service and are fully operational.
Covering the hydrants is a common measure many water districts have begun using to keep winter road spray, salt, chemicals, and debris off them.
“Replacing a fire hydrant, especially on main collector roads, can cost upwards of $10,000, and by doing this simple measure, we can extend a hydrant’s lifespan and reduce maintenance costs by preventing corrosion to hydrant components caused by the road salt used to de-ice the roadways. Most importantly the measure helps hydrants remain dependable in the event of emergency use in fire operations,” LCWD Director John Scenna said.
In the event of an emergency, the bags are designed for easy removal and can be torn off for quick access. LCWD operators and the Lynnfield Fire Department have worked in collaboration prior to moving forward with this measure.
Residents are reminded not to tamper with hydrant coverings and to report any damaged or leaking hydrants to LCWD at 781-334-3901. LCWD also kindly request that you assist in maintaining hydrants clear of snow during the winter months so that they remain accessible in the event of an emergency in your neighborhood.
