School Street Foods Owner Gina Goodwin is on track to give away more than 25,000 meals for this Thanksgiving. This past weekend, she has been distributing Thanksgiving feasts, including around 1,190 on Sunday. Each one will feed approximately 10 people, what she referred to as “the average family” on Thanksgiving.
She is continuing to give meal kits on Monday before transitioning to distributing pre-cooked heat-and-eat meals on Tuesday, which will continue through Wednesday.
On Thanksgiving Day School Street Foods will be giving out free meals to anyone who comes to the restaurant between noon and 4 p.m. Goodwin said, “There’s no requirement; people don’t need to prove why they need the meal.” People can eat at the restaurant or take it with them to go.
Goodwin did all of the prep and distribution out of her own home, including much of the cooking.
“It’s been a lot of organized chaos,” she said, describing how her home has felt these last few days.
Goodwin made sure to include a “shoutout to the community,” saying, “This definitely would not happen without them.” She got help and support from many community members and organizations, including Malden Catholic, Lynnfield High School, Treadwell’s Ice Cream, Peabody Light, Townsend Oil, Danvers Hockey, Vestmark Financial, and “tons and tons of kids doing food drives, baking, and cooking.”
