Lynnfield’s girls cross country team (142 points) finished seventh of nine teams during Saturday’s Cape Ann League championships in Wrentham. Abby Lopez placed fifth with a time of 19:59, while Maeve Wertz (26th – 22:52) entered the top 30. On the boys’ side, Lynnfield (10th) finished last with 256 points. Nick Degennaro (43rd – 18:51), Rowan Bayer (45th – 18:58), and Jason Tran (48th – 19:05) led the Pioneers.
CROSS COUNTRY
The St. John’s Prep cross country team raced in the Catholic Conference Championship held at the Wrentham Developmental Center. The Prep won the varsity 5K race with 29 points, followed by BC High (37), Catholic Memorial (66), Xaverian Brothers (107), Saint John’s Shrewsbury (126), and Malden Catholic (169). Top finishers for the Eagles were Jack McIntosh (15:27), Liam Mahoney (15:47), Henry McDonnell (15:48), Leo Seltenrich (15:49), Liam Callahan (16:05), Sam Valentine (16:24), and Hunter Opal (16:28).

Despite rushing touchdowns from Lucas Deraps (33 yards) and Chase Buoniconti (65), Lynnfield (1-6) met its match at Pioneer Stadium. Manchester-Essex (6-1) led the game, 12-0, and took care of business from there.

Malden Catholic jumped out to a 7-0 lead against St. John’s Prep, but the visiting Eagles (7-0) found their stride from there. Christopher Vargas threw three touchdowns, while Maxwell Parents rushed for another.

Bridget McGee (6 saves) recorded her ninth shutout of the season, Lauren Mattia dished out three assists, and the Pioneers tamed the visiting Panthers. Grace Allen, Izzy Fiorentino, and Cameron Munion scored goals, while coach Kerri Doherty credited Nola Maney, Allison Sweeney, Chloe Bergeron, and Sophie Morgese for strong performances.

With their home win against Pentucket, the Pioneers finished undefeated in the Cape Ann League and captured their first league title since 2014.
Maney got things started with an unassisted goal in the second quarter. From there, Fiorentino banged home a rebound in the third quarter to put the pressure on. McGee (3 saves) recorded a shutout, while Doherty credited Erin Golden, Zoe O’Brien, Munion, and Lily Alves for strong performances.

The Eagles traveled to Providence, and this one came down to the final few minutes. James Minor scored the game-winner on a free kick — his third free-kick goal of the season — before Garrison Murphy added an insurance goal five minutes later off an assist from Mike Hutchinson. Matt Droggitis made six saves to earn his 11th shutout of the season.

Amesbury struck first, but the visiting Pioneers (10-1-5) responded with a pair of first-half goals. Rocco Scenna tied the game on a penalty kick before Johnny Powers tucked the game-winner from distance. Powers’ goal was assisted by Mohammed Ayari.

Giada Antidormi did it all for Lynnfield, scoring two goals and adding two assists. Bella Sykes scored twice and had an assist, while teammate Kaylee Barrett found the back of the net as well. Adriana Regitano had an “excellent game” on defense, according to coach Mark Vermont.

Hannah Ozanian scored five minutes into the action as Lynnfield cruised at Pioneer Stadium. Damiani (4 goals) recorded a first-half hat-trick, while Barrett (goal, 3 assists), Antidormi (3 assists), Sykes (assist), and Ella Pascucci (goal) also made plays.
“It’s been a really long time since we’ve had a balanced attack like this – I keep telling them it’s really hard to defend,” Vermont said. “It’s impressive and we hope to keep moving the ball.”
