Weekly roundup: Soccer squads defeat Pentucket

September 23, 2025 by Joey Barrett

It was a good Monday evening for Lynnfield soccer fans, who saw their boys (5-1 final) and girls (2-0 final) teams take down Pentucket.

The boys received two goals apiece from Rocco Scenna and Brendan Reilly, while Ollie Morgan tucked another.

“It was a good win for us,” said coach Brent Munroe, whose Pioneers improved to 5-1-2. “I thought Mohammed Ayari played very well in the middle for us today.”

For the girls, Giada Antidormi scored two minutes into the action to ignite Lynnfield (5-2).

“It was a nice, pretty goal . . . from Ava Damiani and Bella Sykes,” said coach Mark Vermont.

In the 44th minute, Bella Clancy scored with assists coming from Kaylee Barrett and Antidormi.

“Pentucket battles and their goalie made some big saves,” said Vermont, who also gave a shoutout to Victoria Minor (3 saves). “It’s always a tough one against them, but defensively, we held on.”

Undefeated: no more. The Prep defeated previously-unbeaten Longmeadow at Glatz Field Saturday. Ryan King scored a pair of first-half goals, assisted by Matt LeBlanc and James Minor.

Minor, Ryan Levis, Gus Nugent, and Andrew Wentzil played strong defense in front of netminder Matt Droggitis, who saved three shots to earn his sixth shutout. Midfielders Finn McCabe and Owen Beeny also played well.

St. John’s Prep 3
Xaverian 0

St. John’s Prep defended home turf against familiar foe Xaverian. Midfielder Mike Hutchinson scored twice, while Minor added a goal on a free kick that found the top corner. JJ Koulalis and Garrison Murphy registered assists.

GIRLS SOCCER

Damiani powered the Pioneers with four goals. Antidormi added a goal and an assist.

“Our defense and goalkeeper played a tremendous game,” Vermont said. “I’m very proud of the girls for how hard they worked.”

It was a tough one for Lynnfield, which met its match at Pioneer Stadium against a strong Monomoy side, which scored in every quarter. Sylvester made six saves and faced eight corners to lead the hosts.

Sylvester (4 saves) recorded her fourth consecutive shutout as the Pioneers rolled over their Cape Ann League opposition. Fiorentino and Sophie Morgese scored the game’s only goals, while Mattia dished out an assist. Maney and Lily Alves also played well, according to coach Kerri Doherty.

CROSS COUNTRY

The Frank Kelley Invitational was held at Wrentham Developmental Center this past weekend. The Lynnfield girls were led by Abby Lopez, who finished 12th among 87 seniors with a time of 11:49:52. On the boys’ side, Nick Degennaro (47th – 3,000m senior – 10:55.93) led the charge.

“Everyone ran a great race on a very challenging, hilly course,” said coach Liane Cook.

FOOTBALL

St. John’s Prep 47

St. John’s Prep quarterback Christopher Vargas has gained plenty of national attention this season, and it was easy to see why Friday night. His Eagles (3-0) defeated Central Catholic, 47-21, at Glatz Field in Danvers.

In command from beginning to end, the 190-pound, 6-4 gunslinger threw for 287 yards and four touchdowns. The sophomore was 11-for-14 in the first half alone.

Riley Selvais scored a 46-yard touchdown, Maxwell Parent found the promised land, Ethan Stefanovich opened the scoring with a 28-yard catch from Vargas, and Jordan Toribio took one 48 yards to the house.

The Prep’s defense forced three turnovers.
