To the editor:
The Trump government is a tyranny by any reasonable definition and certainly by the standards of the United States Declaration of Independence.
The Trump regime is denying life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness to the people who live in this country and to millions more around the world. At this moment, the Republican congress is trying to push through on a razor-thin majority a budget that would strip health insurance from millions of people, give tax breaks to the ultra-rich, and gut funding for renewable energy. These measures are being pushed by representatives who supposedly work for the public, but are acting exclusively in the interests of fossil fuel corporations and wealthy donors who will reap billions in lost tax revenue from the bill. This is the very definition of “taxation without representation.”
Further, the Trump regime has engaged in tyrannical measures using the military to suppress freedom of speech by protesters standing up for immigrants who are an overworked, undervalued, and essential part of our farms and daily lives. “He has kept among us, in times of peace, Standing Armies without the consent of our legislatures.” He has ordered ICE raids by masked, armed agents without identification or badges, that represent a constant assault on our neighbors, schools, and churches. Trump has denied immigrants and mistakenly arrested citizens right to due process and made convictions and deportations without evidence of threat. “For depriving us, in many cases, of the benefit of Trial by Jury.”
A government that makes steals from the poor to feed the rich and scapegoats the poorest and least powerful is no government of mine.
“A Prince, whose character is thus marked by every act which may define a Tyrant, is unfit to be the ruler of a free people.”
Sincerely,
Alex DePalma
