ROUNDUP: Laxmen win Round-of-32 showdown

June 3, 2025 by Joey Barrett

Despite allowing eight goals, the ninth-ranked Lynnfield boys lacrosse team had more than enough in the tank against No. 24 Bourne (Div. 4) last Friday in a 21-8 win. Lynnfield’s John Powers exploded for six goals, followed offensively by Kelan Cardinal (5 goals, assist, 5 ground balls), Paul Daley (4 goals, assist), Mike Murphy (3 goals, 2 assists), Owen Doherty (3 assists), and Owen Considine (2 goals, 3 assists).

The No. 2 St. John’s Prep Eagles (18-1) – in search of another Division 1 title – defeated No. 31 Medford by 18 goals at Glatz Field. Sam Pruell and Cal Haughey shined defensively, while 17 Eagles netted goals. Chase Kenyon won 18 of 20 face-offs, while Brody McMahon won three of four. No. 2 Lynnfield, on its home diamond, opened the Division 4 state tournament with a comprehensive victory over No. 31 Amesbury. Pitching was elite –  as it’s been all season – while the bats were hot. The Pioneers will host No. 18 Stoneham Thursday with first pitch slated for 1 p.m.

St. John’s Prep 6
Newton South 0

Braeden Hurley (8 K) earned the win and the No. 10 Eagles flew past No. 23 Newton South in the Division 1 tournament. The offensive load was led by Will Shaheen (2 H, RBI, R) and Connor Durney (2 H, RBI).

SOFTBALL

Lynnfield 5
Oxford 4

A 4-1 deficit was no problem for No. 21 Lynnfield, which upset No. 12 Oxford in a Division 4 tilt. Olivia Kelter put the Pioneers on the board with a solo home run (1-0), but Oxford plated the next four. Lynnfield tied the game, 4-4, in the fourth inning – big plays coming from Angelina O’Hara, Gia Gagnon, and Libby Considine. From there, Morgan Hubbard homered to give Lynnfield a 5-4 lead. Gagnon (5 IP, 3 H, ER, 3 BB, 6 K) earned the win.

“Hubbard, at short, and Kaila George, in center, had amazing diving catches,” said Lynnfield Coach Hector Longo. “Lily Williams and Kelter also had giant days defensively.”

Lynnfield took on No. 5 East Bridgewater Tuesday with results too late to print.

BOYS TENNIS

Newton South 3
St. John’s Prep 2

In Division 1 volleyball, despite taking the first set, the No. 16 Eagles were eliminated in the opening round of the state tournament in five sets. The Prep got off to a fast start, thanks to Jayden Pelletier, who had multiple kills to help his team take the first set, 25-17. No. 17 Newton South responded by winning the second set, 25-16. The teams traded sets, with St. John’s Prep taking the third (25-18) and Newton South winning the fourth (25-20) to force a fifth.
