Laxmen climb out of hole, top Masconomet

May 27, 2025 by Joey Barrett

Lynnfield’s boys lacrosse team, helmed by Coach Pat Lamusta, faced two-goal deficits after the first (6-4) and second (10-8) quarters of Thursday’s (May 22) home game against Masconomet.

But after four quarters – not one, not two – the Pioneers escaped with a 15-12 win.

“We leaned on our seniors to help us climb out of a hole,” said Lamusta, who also coaches Lynnfield’s football team during the fall.

John Powers and Michel Murphy scored four goals apiece to lead a high-powered, come-from-behind offense. (Lynnfield ripped six third-quarter goals to take the lead.)

Entering the fourth quarter with a 14-12 lead, Lynnfield tucked one more for insurance – and that was all she wrote at Pioneer Stadium.

“Michael Murphy’s coast-to-coast clear and goal during a man-down situation was really the tale of the tape,” Lamusta said. “Big plays by our leaders.”

Owen Considine (2 goals, 2 assists), Paul Daley (2 goals, assist), Kelan Cardinal (2 goals, assist), and Owen Doherty (goal, assist) joined the barrage.

“Kelan Cardinal and Owen Considine barely left the field, helping us in transition and playing great defense and riding,” Lamusta said. “Ben Pimentel (15 saves) was phenomenal in net with several key doorstep saves.”

Lynnfield snapped a four-game losing streak. The Pioneers – currently ranked No. 10 in the MIAA’s Division 4 power rankings – await Wednesday afternoon’s state tournament pairings.
