Lynnfield has once again earned designation as a Tree City for 2024. Every year, the National Arbor Day Foundation, a long-time leader in recognizing the importance trees are to our lives, also inspires communities who “plant, nurture and celebrate trees” by awarding them with a Tree City Award.
Lynnfield has again been awarded the prestigious Growth Award, which recognized it for its outstanding tree care and community engagement. The Growth Award acknowledges major milestones and annual activities in five categories that combine to build sustainable community forestry programs over the long term.
The Tree Committee was instrumental in earning this award with educational initiatives that furthered the community’s understanding and appreciation of our tree canopy as a special place. From tree and nature lectures to a Walk and Sketch activity, townspeople participated in recognizing the benefit of trees. We created a tree information brochure available for distribution to all, including new homeowners. During the fall, we produced a 12-part series, “Fall Forest Fridays,” concerning tree interactions with the environment. Each illustrated issue addressed a separate tree-related topic and was made available online and by publication. All this information and more is available on our website, LynnfieldTreeCommittee.org.
For Arbor Day this year, Friday, April 25, we are presenting a special live owl presentation, “Owls Up Close,” which takes place at the Lynnfield Public Library. This program, geared for adults and children aged six and older, will be held from 2-3:30 p.m., including time for questions. Presenters Marcia and Mark Wilson have thrilled audiences of all ages with this program for over 30 years. Marcia will showcase six owls, providing intimate views of these secretive birds of prey, and Mark, a well-known wildlife photojournalist and nature educator, will highlight our local owls’ unique adaptations, habitats, and behaviors in the wild.
Join us for an interactive slideshow and hooting lessons with New England’s favorite wildlife program. This free event is made possible with funds from the Friends of the Lynnfield Public Library and the Lynnfield Conservation Commission.
