LTTE: Kim Baker Donahue: An accountable advocate for all students

March 25, 2025 by To the editor

To the editor:

I am writing to ask for your support in the upcoming School Committee election on April 8 by casting your vote for Kim Baker Donahue. As a Lynnfield resident of 20 years and a mother of a soon-to-be graduating senior, a sophomore, and a 6th grader in our district, I am deeply concerned about the future of Lynnfield Public Schools, the high school.

Over the past several years, our high school has been severely impacted by budget cuts, resulting in the loss of dedicated staff and vital services in departments such as English, Science, World Languages, and the Media Center. Now, as our district grapples with a precarious financial situation and faces an impending $5 million override just to maintain the current status quo for Fiscal Year 26, Lynnfield High School will, for the second year in a row, not receive any critical resources requested by our dynamic principal and assistant principal, who are working diligently to address deficiencies in our program of studies and student services. These resources are essential to fostering a culture of excellence that would improve our vision of a Lynnfield graduate, as well as the educational experiences for both students and staff.

As a parent who regularly watches and attends School Committee meetings, I have been disappointed by most of the committee’s lack of knowledge, understanding, or attention to the needs of our high school students. Updating an existing dress code policy with a few new words does not move the needle when it comes to addressing the genuine concerns of our high school students and their parents. A strong high school is vital to any district’s success and reputation, and it’s become quite clear that we need thought leaders who will consider the needs of our oldest students along with our youngest, to ensure that Lynnfield inspires and educates all students. I believe Baker Donahue is the leader we need.

A lifelong Lynnfield resident, mother, volunteer, and attorney with more than 20 years of experience in estate and trust law, Baker Donahue is uniquely qualified to serve on the Lynnfield School Committee. Her professional background reflects a strong commitment to setting long-term goals, sustainable financial planning, and holding herself accountable in all aspects of her work. Personally, Baker Donahue is kind, intelligent, and respectful of all voices and viewpoints. It’s been said that integrity is the foundation of trust in leadership, and there is no doubt that she will serve our district honorably and ethically, without bias or personal agenda. She will promote a culture that values honesty and accountability, even in the face of challenges or disagreements.

Baker Donahue is a passionate advocate for every student — from our youngest learners to our oldest. With two children, along with a niece and nephew in the district, ranging from elementary to high school, she believes that every student deserves to be valued, empowered, and given equal access to resources and opportunities, preparing them for success in college, careers, and life as thoughtful, contributing members of society.

Finally, like many residents in our community, I have been disheartened by the negative tone and actions of the current School Committee, particularly in how they’ve treated one of their colleagues. However, what saddened me even more was discovering a campaign among incumbent supporters to spread slander and misrepresent Baker Donahue’s values and beliefs. To say this is disappointing is an understatement. Such behavior should be unequivocally recognized as unacceptable in our community. It’s clear that we need a change — leaders who will move our district forward with integrity, honesty, thoughtful long-term planning, and a steadfast commitment to meeting the needs of all our students.

This is a critical time for our community and especially for the long-term planning and financial health of our schools. Please join me in voting for Kim Baker Donahue for the Lynnfield School Committee on April 8. Baker Donahue is the change we need to ensure a strong future for our students, educators, and community.

Thank you,
Heather Rose
