Make it 17 in 19 years for The Prep

February 25, 2025 by Anne Marie Tobin

When it comes to dominance, one could make a solid argument that nobody does it better than the St. John’s Prep swimming and diving program.

Sunday, the Eagles won their 17th state title in 19 years, winning the MIAA Winter Boys State Division 1 Swimming and Diving Championship at Phillips Academy Andover.

The Eagles lapped the field, scoring 330 points, well ahead of runner-up Westford Academy, which tallied 161 points, and Newton North High, which finished third with 160 points.

Several Lynnfield residents contributed to the win.

Will Kennedy had two top-five finishes. He placed fifth in the 100 backstroke (54.44) and seventh in the 100 butterfly (53.35). Joe Berrian placed eighth in the 100 butterfly (53.82). Kye McGlory finished seventh in 1-meter diving (447.70).

Trow Stewart, Brendan Titley, Matt Church, and Wes Ross placed second in the 200 free relay (1:28.92). Porter Mulgrew (backstroke), Declan MacDonald (breaststroke), Kennedy (butterfly), and Reese Martinez (freestyle) placed fourth in the 200 medley relay (1:39.95).

Other top-10 Prep performers were Titley, second in the 100 free (47.44) and third in the 200 free (1:41.29); Mulgrew, second in the 500 free (4:35.05) and third in the 200 individual medley (1:56.64); Ross, third in the 500 free (4:41.63) and fourth in the 200 free (1:42.29); Church, fourth in the 500 free (4:43.19) and fifth in the 200 free (1:44.61); Greg Santosus, sixth in 1-meter diving (455.30); MacDonald, seventh in the 100 breaststroke (1:00.77) and eighth in the 200 IM (2:00.83); and Stewart, 10th in the 50 free (22.49).

The 400 free relay team of Titley, Mulgrew, Church, and Ross turned in the fastest time in the state this year – by almost four seconds – to win the event in 3:12.75.

It’s been an epic season for the Eagles, who also won Catholic Conference and North Sectional titles.
