BOSTON — The Lynnfield boys indoor track team finished 12th out of 41 teams with 14.6 points Monday in the MIAA Division 5 Indoor Track and Field Championship at the Reggie Lewis Track and Athletic Center.
Eli Mendese was the star of the show, finishing second in the high jump (6-02) and sixth in the long jump (20-02), accounting for 11 of the Pioneers’ points. The 4×200 team of Jesse Dorman, Charlie Morgan, Dillon Reilly and Brendan Reilly picked up three points with their best time of the season (1:35.48) and placed sixth.
Michael Murphy finished tied for seventh in the high jump (5-10). Dorman (6.86) failed to advance to the final in the 55 dash, while Brendan Reilly set a PR in the 300 (38.11).
Weston ran away with the team title with 75 points, well ahead of Dennis-Yarmouth, which placed second with 27 points. Four teams, including Cape Ann League rival North Reading, tied for third with 25 points.
While the girls didn’t score any team points, the Pioneers, nonetheless, had much to be optimistic about.
Abby Lopez smashed her PR in the 2-mile by more than nine seconds, finishing 12th in 12:34.50.
“She had the most impressive performance of the day,” said Coach Bill Wallace. “Her hard work and dedication is really starting to pay off. I am looking forward to seeing what she can do in the spring.”
Lauren Mattia also set a PR. She finished 11th in the 600 (1:48.84).
“Even though she just missed scoring, I was happy to see her finally break 1:50 in her event,” Wallace said. “Hopefully, this will be a springboard for her going into the spring track season.”
Caitlin Buonconti ran the 1,000m in 3:37.89.
“I was happy that she was able to finish up her track career with a season-best time,” Wallace said.
Emma Greenleaf missed qualifying for the final in the 55 hurdles (10.21).
“This was not a PR for her, but competing in this meet as a sophomore should give her a confidence boost moving forward,” Wallace said.
North Reading took the team title with 53.25 points.
