In today’s challenging world, is it naive to be an optimist? With constant negative news, is it possible to avoid cynicism?
A new book group, Hope for Cynics: The Surprising Science of Human Goodness, invites participants to explore these questions through a discussion of the best-selling book of the same title.
Stanford psychologist Jamil Zaki argues that cynicism is not only a mental state but one that can negatively impact physical health. In his book, Zaki presents research-based insights on how people can shift their perspectives and behaviors to embrace a more positive, hopeful outlook. He offers practical strategies for balancing skepticism with optimism and finding a “ray of light for dark days.”
The second session of the book discussion will take place on Wednesday, Feb. 12, at 6:30 p.m. at Centre Congregational Church, 5 Summer St., Lynnfield, in the pastor’s outer office. All are welcome, even if they did not attend the first session.
Rev. Tom Bentley and Randy Russell will facilitate the discussion. Copies of the book are available for loan at the Lynnfield Library or can be purchased online or in bookstores.
