Tradition of Thanksgiving Turkey Trot shines bright

November 25, 2024 by For The Weekly News

A sunny but brisk morning greeted over 300 Lynnfield Rotary Turkey Trotters and Kids Fun Runners, Sunday, as the annual 5K Thanksgiving Day Road race took off. This year, the Julie Routhier Foundation and the Lynnfield Mom’s Group teamed up once again to co-sponsor the event, which saw an impressive turnout.

Support for the race (which included members from our local community, friends and family) helps support the Lynnfield Rotary and Julie Routhier Foundation charitable efforts. For the second year, this also included the Rotary adding a third scholarship for The Julie Routhier Foundation for a deserving Lynnfield High School Senior who is committed to enter the teaching profession. The scholarship is named for Julie Routhier, a young mother who lost her life to cancer. Julie was dedicated to enriching her children’s education and valuing the educators who shaped their growth. Her spirit of support and gratitude now drives the foundation’s mission and honors her legacy.

Dressed in full turkey attire, Co-President of Lynnfield Rotary Christine Travers, chairperson of the event, opened the ceremonies with words of appreciation for the racers, the Julie Routhier Foundation, the Lynnfield MOM’s group, and committee members including LHS Rotary Interact group who facilitated the registration process this year. She closed her remarks with heartfelt thanks to the Lynnfield Community whose support is always there.

After the Whitney Houston rendition of The Star-Spangled Banner was played, Bob Priestley from Boston Audio Visual announced the countdown and Christine sent the road racers off. After the 5K road race, the Kid’s Run followed, which took place around Lynnfield Common.
