Joyce Fukasawa is the art guild's featured artist for November and December. (Lynnfield Art Guild)

Fukasawa is LAG’s November, December featured artist

November 12, 2024 by For The Weekly News

The Lynnfield Art Guild (LAG) is proud to announce that local artist Joyce Fukasawa is its featured artist for two months from November through Dec. 31 on LAG’s website www.lynnfieldarts.org.  You can see over 30 of her paintings at the Guild’s website or go directly to her work at www.lynnfieldarts.org/joyce-fukasawa/. Beginning Jan. 1, her art will still be available to view on the website as a past featured artist.

Fukasawa was always drawing and scribbling from the time she was a preschooler in Los Angeles but paper, as well as crayons, chalk and pencils were very scarce during WWII in the internment camp Manzanar where her family was incarcerated for three years. Despite the scarcity of art materials, Fukasawa found happiness in etching on asphalt shingles with rocks that workers left strewn around the barracks. She was excited to start kindergarten and first grade, but there too she had limited art supplies.

After the release from Manzanar, Fukasawa’s family settled in Denver. For the first time, her school years were normal, and she took advantage of all the art classes, including mechanical drawing. After high school, Joyce attended Colorado Women’s College on a scholarship, completing her studies at Colorado University with a major in Art Education. Then, after marriage and years as a stay-at-home mom and volunteer, Fukasawa fell into what became a 40-year career while taking a small job as an interior decorator where she had an opportunity to complete the certification as an interior designer with IIDA (International Interior Designers’ Association). She began her business JF Designs and served as an IIDA board member representing three states, with the opportunity to tour many homes designed by local IIDA designers in New York, Alburquerque, Guadalajara, New Orleans, and Colorado.

After retirement in 2013, Joyce moved to Lynnfield to be closer to her daughter and two of her grandchildren. The move opened a new chapter for her with the unplanned bonus: the many new friends she has made through the Lynnfield Art Guild who share a love of art and in which she continues to take an active role. She enjoys creating with the brush under the tutelage of Bill Deveney and the rest of her “paint family” at the Lynnfield Senior Center.

Joyce enjoys painting scenery, birds, and still life in acrylics and, more recently, watercolor. She has won several ribbons through the LAG art shows and Peabody International Festival, has participated in Art in Bloom, and displayed her art in local banks, libraries, and medical offices.  She hopes her art inspires others to seek their passion and find what brings them simple happiness in their lives! Please contact Joyce at mimijyf@gmail.com if you have any comments or are interested in purchasing any of her pieces on display.

The Guild is proud to showcase Joyce Fukasawa’s work and invites the public to check out its website www.lynnfieldarts.org , visit the Guild’s Facebook and Instagram pages (Lynnfieldarts) and learn about the premier arts organization in Lynnfield.
