ROUNDUP: Varsity soccer teams blank opponents

October 29, 2024 by Joey Barrett

Two games, and not one goal allowed for Lynnfield’s varsity soccer teams.

The boys took down Pentucket, 3-0, at Pioneer Stadium behind two goals from Charlie Morgan and another from Matt Reinold (2 assists). Joel Anthony picked up an assist on Reinold’s goal.

“Charlie is a senior and these were his first two goals,” said Lynnfield coach Brent Munroe. “He’s been a good player for a long time. It’s just that he’s a defender. We moved him up today and that was good to see.”

No home turf, no problem. The girls hit the road to Amesbury and returned home with a 7-0 victory behind Kaylee Barrett’s hat-trick. Bella Carroll (2 goals), Emma Rose (goal, 2 assists), and Ava Damiani (goal, assist) also contributed.

“Hannah Doherty did a really nice job for us on the outside mid today,” said coach Mark Vermont. “The girls did a really nice job moving the ball and creating good scoring opportunities.”

In a scoreless showdown at Glatz Field in Danvers, St. John’s Prep goalies Ceyln Heslin and Matt Droggitis combined for the shutout. Senior midfielder Jack Quigley, as well as senior wingers Jack Neal and Matt Foley played well for the Eagles, according to coach David Crowell.

For fans of stellar defense, this one was for you. In Cape Ann League action, Lynnfield and host Pentucket fought to a hard-fought draw. Lynnfield coach Kerri Doherty credited Gia Marotta and Lauren Mattia in the midfield, as well as Lily Alves, Hayden Valiton, and Chloe Gromko on the defensive end.

“Goalkeeper Lauren MacDonald had a solid day, picking up 12 saves in net – including a big save on a stroke in the fourth quarter to keep the game scoreless,” Doherty said.
