ROUNDUP: Three-win week for field hockey squad

October 22, 2024 by Joey Barrett

Lynnfield’s field hockey team earned a 3-0 victory at Amesbury on Monday. In the first quarter, Taylor Valiton scored off a corner feed from Lily Alves. Lynnfield kept its one-goal lead into the fourth quarter. Then ,at the six-minute mark, Cameron Munion scored a goal from a Sophie Morgese assist. From there, Valiton went from goal-scorer to facilitator when she set up Morgese. Lynnfield’s defense did its job, too, allowing goalie Lauren MacDonald to pick up a shutout between the pipes.

FIELD HOCKEY

Triton 1

The Pioneers received goals from Izzy Fiorentino and Valiton (2) to triple up Triton on home turf. Lauren Mattia, Gia Marotta, and Alves dished out assists, while MacDonald held her own and made three saves. Lynnfield outshot and outcornered Triton with 15 shots and eight corners.

Lynnfield 1
Essex Tech 0

The Pioneers escaped Essex Tech in a Cape Ann League thriller that saw Fiorentino tuck the game-winning goal from Alves and Marotta just two minutes into the first quarter.

It was all the No. 5 Pioneers needed to secure a victory against a Division 1, highly-skilled Essex Tech team that ranks No. 24. MacDonald (6 saves) stood strong between the pipes.

“Defensively, Chloe Gromko stayed poised, executing with some big stops – not only in the backfield, but also, breaking up two Essex Tech corners as the flier on the defensive corner unit,” said Lynnfield coach Kerri Doherty. “Alves, in typical fashion, was a force in the backfield, making some clutch clears out to the side with under two minutes remaining to preserve the win.”

BOYS SOCCER

Rockport 0

Three Pioneers scored goals in Lynnfield’s shutout victory in Rockport. Better yet, they were all in the second half, courtesy of Joel Anthony, Rocco Scenna, and Brenden Reilly. All three goals were assisted by Matt Reinold.

North Reading 3
Lynnfield 1

Lynnfield had its moments, but came up short on enemy turf. Scenna scored the Pioneers’ goal, while Kelan Cardinal was “excellent in goal,” according to coach Brent Munroe.

“Our team played hard until the end,” Munroe said.

GIRLS SOCCER

Lynnfield 1
North Reading 0

The Pioneers avenged a 2-0 loss to North Reading from earlier this fall. They took care of business, 1-0, after Kaylee Barrett tucked the game-winning goal to silence the Hornets’ home crowd.

CROSS COUNTRY

During Saturday’s Catholic Memorial Invitational at Franklin Park, Abby Lopez led Lynnfield with a first-place team finish of 23:00. Gabriella Bottaro and Caitlin Buoniconti followed with even times of 24:27:00.

FOOTBALL

St. John’s Prep 36
Malden Catholic 6

Just two hours after The Prep’s Athletic Hall-of-Fame breakfast ceremony, the 6-0 football team rolled to a 30-point win against Malden Catholic at Glatz Field in Danvers. Freshman quarterback Chris Vargas (14-for-16, 145 yards, 3 TD) led the way alongside Merrick Barlow, who hauled in two touchdown passes.
