ROUNDUP: Personal records aplenty in cross country

October 8, 2024 by Joey Barrett

Lynnfield’s cross country runners lined up against a young Georgetown team at home on Wednesday, Oct. 2. The girls swept the first seven places and won their meet, 15-50.  The boys team improved to 4-0 with a 16-47 victory.

“Everyone got a huge PR (40 seconds or more) today or an equal time from last week,” said girls’ coach Liane Cook. “Some even shattered their PR from last year in today’s race.”

Gabriella Bottaro (21:06) placed first overall with Kaila George (21:17, 15-second PR from last year) and Caitlin Buoniconti (21:25) close behind in second and third, respectively. Abby Lopez (21:33), Shaelyn Moore (23:07), Maeve Wertz (23:07), April Sun (24:21, 45-second PR from last year) Gemma Primavera (29:42, 3-minute PR from last year), Afsana Rabbini (30:57, 5 minute PR from last week), and Ciara Long (31:02:00, 2-minute PR from last week) rounded out the top 10.

“I was very proud of them,” Cook said. “They showed great leadership, being very encouraging and supportive of the other team.  Despite not having much competition from Georgetown because they were so young, the LHS girls still pushed themselves to run very well.  I was very proud of them. They could have taken an easier route and just ran today’s race as more of a social workout, but they didn’t. They listened to my strategy to work with each other and strive together to be better.”

On the boys’ side, Shea McCarthy (1st, 16:09), yet again, led the way with another PR on his home course.

He was followed by Dylan Nguyen (2nd, 16:56), who also went home with a PR. Nick Degennaro placed third with a personal-best time of 17:51. He was followed by Ashkrit Mahajan (4th, PR 18:11) and Ritvik Mahajan (6th, PR 8:38). Mike Marenghi (18:58), Rowan Beyer (19:10) and Jason Tran (PR 19:27) also finished in the top 10.

Eight minutes into the second half, the host Pioneers finally broke through in a highly-anticipated Cape Ann League thriller. Emma Rose netted the game-winning goal to give Lynnfield a 1-0 win against the Clippers. Ava Damiani and Bella Carroll delivered the assists.

“Jordan Calichman had a great game for us on defense, along with Ariana Guarracino, Adriana Regitano, and Sofia Giardina. Also, Victoria Minor did a great job in net,” said Lynnfield coach Mark Vermont. “Our midfield played really well and we moved the ball pretty well because of their outstanding play. Overall, a great team win.”
