The Sagamore Spring G.C. team of captain Tom Waisnor, vice captain Eric Danneberg, Bill Trites, Rob Walsh, Mike Salvo, Perry Verge, Jim Harrison, Steve Sorrentino, and Glen Watson has punched its ticket to the Mass Golf Men’s Team Matches Championship with a first-place finish in the Region 3 flight. Team Sagamore finished the regular season of group matches as the No. 2 ranked team in points among the 15 teams that qualified for the final.

The final is scheduled to  be played Oct. 21 at Ipswich C.C. Each team will be represented by six players who will be paired according to handicap, lowest to highest. Players must have played at least one regular season match to be eligible to play. The winner will be determined by the aggregate scores of each player.

According to the Mass Golf website, the Mass Golf Men’s Team Matches are a statewide competition among Mass Golf member clubs that allow male Mass Golf members to participate in a competitive and social inter-club format. Team Matches consisted of four matches over the course of the summer months (June-September), with one match taking place each month. The format for the matches was 18-hole net four-ball match play, pitting two players from each team competing against each other. Teams were awarded one point for winning a hole, one-half point for each tied hole, and no points for a lost hole. In addition, each side was awarded two additional points for every match won.

Teams competed in four-team regions with the winner of each region advancing to the championship round. Team Sagamore posted an overall record of 3-1 in Region 3. It defeated The Meadow at Peabody twice, 42.5-17.5 and 39-21 (in the final match of the season). It also bested Beverly G&T, 34-21, and suffered a 33-27 loss to Rockport C.C.
