School Committee begins search for a new assistant superintendent

July 16, 2024 by Adam Levine

Following the appointment of Interim Superintendent Thomas Geary as the superintendent of Lynnfield Public Schools, passing with a vote of 4-1, the school committee discussed a search committee for a new assistant superintendent.

School Committee Chair Kate DePrizio moved to create an interview committee that would consist of up to nine people.

The school committee recommends the interview committee include two school committee members, two Lynnfield Public Schools parents, the superintendent, a principal, an elementary curriculum director, the Lynnfield Teachers Association president, and a Lynnfield High School department head, DePrizio said.

“Our goal is to have a well-rounded committee that has representation very much like this, taking into account summer schedules and that we might need some flexibility,” she said.

The motion to create an interview committee that would consist of up to nine people passed with a vote of 4-1.

“I need someone that’s complimentary to me — to the skillset that I have,” Geary said. “I need a collaborative partner to work with me.”

He said hiring a new assistant superintendent adds another “layer of stability to the district to grow (and) to continue to pursue the goals we’ve laid out for this year and beyond.”

The position is already budgeted in FY25 and its primary focus will be curriculum, instruction, and evaluating performance, Geary said.

He said he is looking for someone to be the “ears and ears” in the schools — “a receptive person anyone can go to.”

There will be a public interview of the finalists for the position at an upcoming school committee meeting, Geary said.

A letter from the school committee to the Lynnfield Public Schools community following the meeting outlined the search committee for an assistant superintendent and encouraged LPS parents to apply.

The letter stated that the school committee will notify the selected search committee members on July 18 to begin moving forward with the search process.

The school committee can be reached at lpssc@lynnfield.k12.ma.us and Geary can be reached at gearyt@lynnfield.k12.ma.us with any questions.
