For the 30th time in 34 years, the St. John’s Prep Eagles are Catholic Conference champions. Head coach Mark Metropolis and his squad are a perfect 13-0 overall and 9-0 in the league.
The Eagles hosted Malden Catholic Monday. The Lancers suffered a similar fate that most teams have experienced going up against St. John’s Prep, a 5-0 sweep.
It was a near-perfect match as the Eagles dropped just one set across the five matches.
In first singles, John DeAngelis defeated Jack Burgess 6-0, 6-0, while in second singles, Jack Prokopis took care of Nan Dinh 6-0, 6-0 to get the Eagles off to a commanding start.
Third singles, Luke Free, was too much for Lucas Wang, defeating him in straight sets 6-0, 6-0.
First doubles, Wade Evits and Charlie Weld, showed their chemistry, beating Matteo Peledge and Drew Rynak 6-0, 6-1. Second doubles, Chris Melville and Ciaran de Buy Wenniger, defeated Julian Cuper and James Guild 6-0, 6-0.
Earlier this season, Metropolis earned his 500th win at St. John’s Prep against Wellesley High, and, now, he adds another Catholic Conference title to his already-impressive resume.
SOFTBALL
Lynnfield 4
Essex Tech 2
The Pioneers won on Senior Day to move to 7-8 on the season and 5-6 in the Cape Ann league. Plus, it was the seniors coming up clutch for Lynnfield. Sophia Brown, despite having runners on base, got out of each jam she faced. Brown left 10 Essex Tech runners on base en route to a win.
Ava Gamache broke the 2-2 deadlock with a two-run hit, bringing home Julia Corrente and Lily Williams. On defense, Catie Kampersal anchored the Pioneers, making big plays and covering every blade of grass in center field.
Lynnfield 13
Manchester Essex 1
Thanks to senior Sophia Brown’s four-hitter with two walks and seven strikeouts across seven innings, Lynnfield’s softball team took care of business – and then some – against Manchester-Essex on the road.
Ava Gamache, Morgan Hubbard, Kaila George, and Olivia Kelter all had two hits apiece, while Libby Considine doubled and drove in two runs and Julia Corrente added a two-run single.
BOYS LACROSSE
St. John’s Prep 10
Lincoln-Sudbury 6
The Prep (12-1) avenged its first loss of the season with a four-goal win against Lincoln-Sudbury (7-5). Better yet, “It felt good to play lacrosse in nice weather,” as said by Eagles’ coach John Pynchon.
Cam McCarthy delivered with a hat trick, Ben Merena tucked two more, and Andrew Klein, Nick Schibli, Ryan De Lucia, and Charlie Angle played aggressively, according to Pynchon. Max Putney saved all four of his shots against, while Jack Doherty and Will Crawford combined to win eight face-offs.
BASEBALL
St. John’s Prep 5
BC High 1
It was a happy Thursday for The Prep, which knocked off top-ranked (MIAA) BC High in a 5-1 final. Hits came from Gavin Gold, Will Shaheen (2 RBI), and Aidan Driscoll, while Braeden Hurley (4 K) tossed a strong game across six innings.
