Girls salvage tie; boys drop first

May 7, 2024 by Anne Marie Tobin

It was a split week for the Lynnfield boys and girls track teams. In an exciting finish that went down to the final event, the girls came from behind to salvage a 72-72 tie at Amesbury. The boys didn’t fare as well, losing their first meet of the season, 88-57, to the Indians.

Trailing by five points going into the 4×400 relay, senior captain Olivia Goguen, sophomore Aislin McCormack, freshman Lauren Mattia and sophomore Shaelyn Moore delivered the goods to pick up five points with a first-place finish.

Senior captain Emilie Bell was a double winner, taking both the shot put (28-02) and discus (90-09). Freshman Emma Greenleaf won the 100 hurdles (17.20) and finished second in the long jump (13-07). Junior Chase Carangelo (4-08) and freshman Kate Shrewsbury (4-06) finished first and second, respectively, in the high jump, while Moore (7-06) and junior Maeve Donovan (6-00) finished first and second in the high jump. Rounding out the Pioneers’ winners were sophomore Abby Lopez in the javelin (84-00), freshman Alison Maddocks in the triple jump (31-01) and senior captain Viola Wertz in the 2-mile (12:57).

Picking up three points each with second-place finishes were Elliana Moretti in the shot put (26-05), freshman Ava Freni in the 100 dash (13.60), Mattia in the 800 (2:47.8) and McCormack in the 400 (69.4). Goguen also picked a point with a third-place finish in the 400 hurdles (77.8).

On the boys’ side, the Pioneers had four winners, three of them in field-event sweeps. Junior Eli Mendese (18-10), sophomore Zahir Mitchell (18-02) and senior Joey Cucciniello (18-02) swept the long jump. Sophomore Nick Kelter (40-01), Cucciniello (39-06) and Mendese (37-04) swept the triple jump. Senior Ethan Francis (5-08), Mendese (5-08) and junior Dillon Reilly (5-04) swept the high jump. Senior Quinn Hardistay (118-09) and junior Brady Field (103-09) finished first and third in the javelin.

Reilly finished second in the 400 (56.9) and also finished second in the 200 (23.6).

Others earning points for the Pioneers included senior Davius Chan, second in the 400 hurdles (66.5); Mitchell, second in the 100 (11.4); Srivanth Tudi, second in the 2-mile (10:59.5); senior Ryan DeBenedictis, second in the pole vault (9-06); senior Ryan Nguyen, third in the mile (5:19); Chan, third in the 110 high hurdles (19.2); freshman Ben Clancy, third in the 800 (2:24), junior Jesse Dorman, third in the 200 (24.1) and sophomore Dante Ford, third in the pole vault (8-06).
