For a project, the Lynnfield Girl Scout Troop 64460 fixed up a garden bed at Summer Street Elementary School and filled it with various types of plants, flowers to attract butterflies for pollinators, sensory plants, and a kindness rock garden, with the hopes of maintaining the beds through next year and then passing it off to the next troop.
According to one of the troop leaders, Radhika Nishanth, the garden bed project was the kids’ plan to commemorate Earth Day.
“They had all these different kinds of ideas,” Nishanth said. “So they said ‘let’s make sure it has enough flowers because we wanted to make sure that it’s attractive, for pollination, and anything that attracts butterflies and helps those flowers grow would be important.’”
The sensory plants came from the idea of wanting to also touch and feel the plants, rather than just smelling their good fragrance. For the kindness rock garden, they were inspired by prior nature walks that they’ve done at Ipswich River Park, which did something similar.
“This project certainly helped the girls build courage, confidence, and character to make the world a better place,” Nishanth said. “Our hope is that the children and faculty at SSS will enjoy the new space for years to come.”
