He’s only been on the job for a little more than two weeks, but that’s not stopping new Recreation Commission Director Jimmy Olsen from putting a different spin on programming.
Last week, Rec announced it will be conducting two “walking school bus” tours in partnership with the Lynnfield Planning and Conservation Department and Massachusetts Safe Routes to School.
According to mass.gov, SRTS is a free, federally-funded program administered by the Massachusetts Department of Transportation that works to increase safe walking, biking, and rolling among public elementary, middle, and high school students. It uses a collaborative, community-focused approach that bridges the gap between health and transportation.
The SRTS mission is to increase safety for students walking in their communities. Its goals are to help students stay active and build independence, boost timely attendance and decrease traffic congestion and improve air quality.
Lynnfield’s walks will feature a minion theme with stickers and bookmarks distributed to all participants.
The Summer Street School walk will be held on Thursday, May 9 starting at 8 a.m. at Reedy Meadow Golf Course. Participants will gather and proceed to walk about .3 miles to the school.
The Huckleberry Hill School walk will be held on Thursday, May 16 starting at 8:20 a.m. from Glen Meadow Park. From there, participants will walk approximately .8 miles to school.
Children in grades K-2 must be accompanied by an adult. Children in grades 3 and 4 may walk without supervision.
The event is free. To register, go to Rec’s website at www.Lynnfield Rec.com.
