School Committee reorganizes as newly-elected members start; discusses 2024 to 2025 school calendar

April 19, 2024 by Richelle Melad

The School Committee unanimously voted to elect Kate DePrizio as Chair of the Committee at a recent meeting, and Kristen Elworthy as the Vice Chair.

“I can’t say how impressed I was with the new young candidates in Lynnfield,” long time Committee Member James Dillon said. “…just very impressive how bright and driven and how much they care about Lynnfield and want to help the town and move ahead.”

Dillon said that newly-elected member Jenny Sheehan would have been equally qualified to be vice chair, but that Elworthy’s previous membership in the Finance Committee would probably make her a liaison between the two committees.

“Hopefully that will help in our relationships with, since you already have relationships with them,” Dillon said.

10-year School Committee Member Jamie Hayman added that he and Dillon will be there to help the newly-elected members, and ensure that the committee goes to the right direction.

Sheehan added that Elworthy has strong communication skills, which Sheehan thinks that “historically in the recent years has been lacking a little bit.”

Interim Superintendent Tom Geary also talked about some highlights in the calendar for the upcoming 2024-2025 school year, and he said that teachers would return to work the Monday before Labor Day on Aug. 26, students from grades 1 to 12 would return to school on Aug. 28., and kindergarten orientation would be on Aug. 29. He also said that early releases will continue the first Wednesday of every month for teaching professional development. A full day of professional development will be moved to November in the upcoming year, because of the presidential elections this year.
